Quality Early Learning and Care Depends on Qualified Early Childhood Educators

The Government of Alberta’s 2020 review of its Child Care Licensing Act and supporting regulations provided a timely opportunity for broad discussions on the issue of quality in early learning and care. According to two recent and extensive reports, regulation can be used to improve quality by raising the requirements for specialized post-secondary education and for professional development, so that early childhood educators are optimally prepared to work effectively with young children and their families. In Quality Early Learning and Care Depends on Qualified Early Childhood Educators, Marie Lesoway summarizes the arguments, evidence, and key recommendations from these reports. Lesoway’s brief and informative summary was commissioned by the Edmonton Council for Early Learning and Care for the purpose of stimulating useful discussion about enhancing the quality of early learning and care in Alberta.
